Alternative medicine and prostate
An overview…
Alternative medicine and prostate |
Homeopathy
Homeopathy is a science that is essentially based on the “principle of potency” i.e. small amounts of natural substances are used to stimulate the body’s self-healing mechanisms. Homeopathy can be very helpful for symptomatic relief of most prostate diseases and can even initiate healing. The homeopathic regimens typically used to treat prostate disoders include Lycopodium 200c three doses in the first 24 hours followed by six drops of Sabal serrulata mother tincture three times a day for at least 2 to 3 months.
Aromatherapy
Aromatherapy is one that may be able to help and in particular lavender oil which has a soothing and relaxing effect may help manage long term prostate problems such as chronic pain as seen in non-bacterial prostatitis.
Hydrotherapy
Hot or cold water administered externally or internally may be effective in treating conditions ranging from stress and pain to toxins, bacteria, and viruses that cause disease. In theory, hot water soothes and relaxes the body, while cold water discourages inflammation. Contrast therapies, those that alternate between hot and cold water, stimulate circulation. The most frequent clinical uses of hydrotherapy include whirlpool and Sitz baths to rehabilitate injuries and alleviate stress, fever induction through heat stress, and neutral baths for relaxation. The Sitz Bath, in particular, is a very old and yet one of the most effective treatments for prostate pain. The Sitz brings a great flow of blood to a specific area of the body such as prostate.
Acupuncture
Acupuncture can restore balance to your body and help your overall health. Acupuncture is a component of the traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) system of medicine. As such, a diagnosis based on TCM is generally made prior to the administration of acupuncture needles. With respect to prostate, acupuncturists are confident that it may help improve conditions for those with abnormal prostate enlargement (benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH) and could stand in as an alternative to traditional drug or surgical treatments. They believe that acupuncture could effectively relieve the discomfort that comes with urinary problems through stimulating specific points on the body. The fine needle treatment used in acupuncture would help regulate functions of the prostate, bladder and urethra in order to help relax the urethral sphincter and smooth muscles of the prostate as well as to increase the distensibility of the bladder.
Massage therapy
Massage is relaxing and can help the blood flow in your body and also may increase the amount of endorphins which can help alleviate pain. Chiropractic can also help restore the energy flow in your body. Something as simple as ice pack can reduce pain by relieving inflammation at the site of the prostate.
Yoga
Many people think that yoga is just stretching. But while stretching is certainly involved, yoga is really about creating balance in the body through developing both strength and flexibility. While there is no specific Yoga practice for prostate health along with general regular exercises have been found to improve ejaculation, erection and sexual potency by reducing body fatigue, anxiety and also by relaxing pelvic floor muscles.
Chiropractic medicine
Chiropractic, which loosely means “to treat by hand,” is a type of manipulative therapy that has been practiced in the U.S. for over 100 years. This discipline is based on the premise that function of the joints and muscles of the spine can have a profound effect upon health. Through a complex relationship with the nervous system, problems with vertebral (spinal) joints can result in local neck and back pain and even cause pain to be felt in the head, arms, and legs (“referred” pain). Chiropractors identify these problems in specific joints as chiropractic “subluxations” or “joint dysfunctions.”
Hypnosis (hypnotic therapy)
Hypnosis is a way of relaxing yourself until you enter a state of trance and can access the deepest part of your mind i.e. your subconscious mind or conscience (as they call it in the east). The aim is to lead you into a state of heightened relaxation and suggestibility. More research is needed to discover the specific benefits of hypnosis in increasing, improving and enhancing prostate health.
